About Dots and Boxes: Neon Grand Grid

Dots and Boxes: Neon Grand Grid is the long-form version for players who already know their chains from their loops. The field is a seven-by-seven lattice of glowing studs on a dark slate panel: eighty-four lines, thirty-six boxes and plenty of room for a real middle game. Lime and violet neon tubes hum into place between the studs, and every captured square lights up in its owner's colour. The rules are the familiar ones: draw one line per turn, take a box by closing its fourth side, then draw again. On a board this size, however, the opening lasts longer, several long chains and loops form at once, and counting them correctly decides who is forced to open the first one. The computer starts on Hard, which plays safe lines through the opening and then switches to an exact search of the whole remaining game once the end is in sight, happily using the double-cross against you. There are no line warnings or hints here, and only three takebacks per game, so every move has to be your own idea. Want to warm up first? Pick Easy or Medium from the new game panel, choose to move first or second, and watch your personal record grow for each level.
